Codex:Manual of Style

From Codex
Jump to navigationJump to search
The following is a policy or guideline for the Codex.

This Manual of Style can be understood as an editing framework for the Codex. Contributors should do their best to conform to this set of rules when making new pages and categories in order to avoid, among many issues, duplicate categories, duplicate pages, poorly written pages, poorly formatted pages, and misused templates. As a rule, the Wikipedia:Manual of Style should serve as a basis for editing on the Codex. Some Codex-specific guidelines will also be used, which can be read below.
New editors should give the Manual of Style a thorough read before making new contributions, and consult them whenever they are unsure of how to go about building pages.

Layout

If a page exceeds a few sentences or lines and has potential to be a full page, it must needs be divided into sections under headers of various sizes. These are categorized as follows:

Character pages

Add any warning or message templates first (e.g. Template:Stub or Template:Otheruses). Next, add Template:Character in this case, filling out the appropriate spaces and leaving the others blank. If there is a quote by or about a character that the editor feels sums up the personality of a character, that quote should be added after Template:Character but before the body of the page, using Template:Quote.
Next, copy-paste the following syntax from here to the page, then fill in the areas beneath each corresponding header. If something is not known or the page is simply not big enough yet, ideally leave the headers so they can be filled out. On short or less important character pages, it is all right to leave the page at one or two sentences, but in that situation, Template:Stub must be used.

==Characteristics==
Description of physical and behavioral traits.
==Biography==
Character backstory, broken down into subheadings (===) on larger bios

Country pages

Add any warning or message templates first. Next, add Template:Country in this case, filling out the appropriate spaces and leaving the others blank.
Next, copy-paste the following syntax from here to the page, then fill in the areas beneath each corresponding header. If something is not known or the page is simply not big enough yet, ideally leave the headers so they can be filled out. On small or less important country pages, it is all right to not use this template, but ==History== should always be included if it is known.

=History=
History of the country.
=Geography=
Description of natural phenomena, area the country is situated, general geography.
==REGION A==
Description of the region.
===Cities===
===Townships===
===Villages===
==REGION B==
Description of the region.
===Cities===
===Townships===
===Villages===

Family pages

Put any notices or warnings at the top, then attach Template:House, even to pages for clans and other family groups that aren't "houses" per se. Fill in relevant info, then insert the headers below into the page and fill 'em out as well as can be. For smaller or less well-known houses or clans with very short history blurbs, just ===Known members=== is enough.

==History==
===Known members===

Location pages

Language pages

Post fitting descriptions below the corresponding headers and leave the headers blank without removing them if something is not yet developed but will be later. Replace all-caps lines with the name of the language or word in the language. For languages that are not well-documented and vocabulary is virtually unknown and not intended to be developed, this template is not necessary.

=History=
History of the language.
=Geography=
Geographic spread of the language.
=Characteristics=
Broad-strokes description of the language without going into details discussed in the headers below.
==Phonology==
Range of vocalizations or sounds that appear in the language.
==Syntax==
Grammar explanation. Where words go in sentences, what is acceptable structure, et cetera.
==Morphology and cases==
More in-depth explanation of cases and how words combine, inflect, decline, depending on case, et cetera.
==Vocabulary==
List of known words. If these are excessive, it may be appropriate to take each of these and place it on a subpage, entitled with LANGUAGENAME/Nouns, LANGUAGENAME/Verbs, and so on, and provide links to them here instead. For a good idea of how this works, consult the Teles page.

Organization pages

Add any warning or message templates first. Next, add Template:Organization in this case, filling out the appropriate spaces and leaving the others blank.
Next, copy-paste the following syntax from here to the page, then fill in the areas beneath each corresponding header. If something is not known or the page is simply not big enough yet, ideally leave the headers so they can be filled out. On small or less important group pages, it is all right to not use this template, but in all group pages === Known members === should be listed if any members at all are known.
